In the anime series UFO Robo Grendizer, the planet Vega is unstable due to the use of the highly energetic but radioactive substance VegaTron. In order to expand their empire and find a suitable planet for colonization, the ruthless Vega king declares war on their neighboring planet Fleed, which is highly developed but peaceful. However, the attack backfires, and Vega is turned into a radioactive wasteland. The sole survivor of the royal dynasty, Prince Duke Fleed, manages to steal the most feared weapon of Vega – Grendizer, a humanoid battle robot capable of combining with a carrier spacecraft. Fleeing from Vega's forces, Duke lands on Earth in Japan and meets Dr. Omon, who controls a research laboratory. The doctor introduces him to the locals as his son Daisuke and helps him hide the spacecraft. Two years later, a young man named Kouji Kabuto, who studies flying saucers and tries to make contact with them, returns to Japan. However, the flying saucers turn out to be a battle fleet from Vega. To save Kouji and protect his new home, Daisuke must use Grendizer. The series features mecha battles, intergalactic warfare, and political intrigue. It also explores themes of loyalty, friendship, and sacrifice. Grendizer has become an iconic mecha in the anime and manga world. The series has inspired merchandise, video games, and spin-offs.
